Proposal, Engagement & Elopement Photographer
in Hvar, Croatia
Hvar is one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean — and one of the best places in Europe to mark a proposal, elopement, or engagement. I'm a local Croatian photographer based in Split, shooting Hvar regularly, and I know exactly where and when the light, the quiet, and the setting come together.

The Most Romantic Island in the Adriatic
With over 2,700 hours of sunshine a year, Venetian stone architecture, panoramic fortress views, and the Paklinski Islands scattered across turquoise water below — Hvar has a quality that's difficult to describe until you're standing in it. It's both vibrant and intimate, grand and quietly personal.
As a photographer based in Split, Hvar is one of my most-visited locations. I know the fortress terraces, the hidden monastery gardens, the narrow alleys where the light falls perfectly at golden hour, and the quiet corners that most visitors walk straight past. That local knowledge is what makes the difference between a good session and an unforgettable one.
Whether you're planning a surprise proposal at Fortica, an engagement session in the Old Town, or an intimate elopement overlooking the Paklinski Islands — I'll help you plan every detail from abroad, and be there on the day to make it feel natural, unhurried, and entirely yours.

Where I Shoot in Hvar
Fortica — Spanish Fortress
Fortica Španjola is my go-to location in Hvar — and if you're planning a proposal here, I'd argue there's nowhere better on the entire Croatian coast. Perched 100 metres above Hvar Town, the fortress offers 360° views across the old town's terracotta rooftops, the harbour, and the Paklinski Islands stretching into the Adriatic below. At sunset, the entire scene turns gold.
The terraces inside the fortress walls give real privacy even in summer — a platform above the world where a proposal feels cinematic and genuinely intimate at the same time. I've shot proposals, elopement ceremonies, and couple sessions here and it never gets old. The combination of 16th-century stone, open sky, and sea views creates photographs that don't look like anyone else's.
Best for: surprise proposals, elopement ceremonies, couple portraits
Best time: 1 hour before sunset — golden light directly over the Paklinski Islands
Practical note: entrance tickets required, easy , but uphill walk up from Old Town (~15 min)
Crowd tip: arrive just before the afternoon tour groups leave — by sunset it quiets down significantly

Hvar Old Town & St. Stephen's Square
The heart of Hvar Town is one of the most elegant piazzas in the Mediterranean. Venetian Renaissance architecture, the 17th-century arsenal, stone-paved squares, and the harbour lined with yachts and fishing boats create an atmosphere that feels effortlessly romantic without trying. Walking through the narrow side alleys just behind the main square — where the light is soft and filtered through stone — is some of the best natural light I photograph in anywhere.
Best for: engagement walks, candid couples portraits, post-proposal sessions
Best time: early morning (before 9am in peak season) or the last hour of daylight
Crowd tip: summer afternoons are very busy — early morning sessions are dramatically quieter and more intimate

Monastery
Just a short walk east along the harbour from the main square, the Dominican Monastery sits quietly at the water's edge with its cloister garden and old stone walls overlooking the sea. It's less visited than Fortica but offers something different — a calm, shaded intimacy that works beautifully for elopement portraits and engagement sessions where you want the setting to feel personal rather than dramatic. The reflections off the water at golden hour are exceptional here.
Best for: intimate engagement portraits, elopement ceremony moments, editorial couples photography
Best time: late afternoon into golden hour
Mood: quiet, refined, soft Mediterranean light

St. Mark's Church & Hidden Gardens
Tucked behind the main square, the area around St. Mark's Church offers quiet corners, weathered stone walls draped in Mediterranean greenery, and a genuinely unhurried atmosphere. It's one of the spots I use when a couple wants portraits that feel personal and exploratory rather than posed at a viewpoint. The textures here — old stone, climbing plants, soft filtered light — photograph beautifully.
Best for: relaxed couples walks, intimate portraits, post-elopement sessions
Best time: anytime outside peak midday
Mood: authentic, unhurried, old-world Hvar
Practical note: Needs reservation with fee

Paklinski Islands — By Boat
A short water taxi ride from Hvar Town, the Paklinski Islands offer something the town itself can't — complete seclusion. Turquoise water, pine-covered shores, hidden coves, and almost no other people. For couples who want an elopement or engagement session that feels genuinely private and away from everything, arriving by boat and spending an hour on one of these islands creates some of the most striking images I produce anywhere in Croatia.
Best for: intimate elopements, adventurous couples, barefoot beach sessions
Best time: morning sessions before the day boats arrive
Practical note: water taxi available from Hvar harbour
A Typical Hvar Proposal or Engagement Session
Most sessions in Hvar run 60–90 minutes and combine two or three locations — typically starting at Fortica for the proposal or ceremony, then moving down into Old Town for a relaxed walk through the alleys and harbour as the light drops. The pacing is intentionally unhurried — this isn't a tick-box shoot, it's time to actually be in one of the most beautiful places on earth together.
For surprise proposals, I arrive early, position discreetly, and use a telephoto lens to capture the moment without being visible. I've done this many times at Fortica and in the Old Town — the key is precise planning of the approach route so your partner doesn't see me before you're ready.
I'm based in Split and reach Hvar by fast catamaran — approximately 1 hour each way. Travel fee applies for Hvar sessions, which I'll outline clearly when you enquire.
Everything You Need to Know
Getting to Hvar
Fly into Split Airport (SPU). Fast catamaran to Hvar Town takes about 1 hour. Direct connections from major UK, US, and European cities in summer.
Best months
May–June: warm, fewer crowds, beautiful light. September: golden light, warm sea, more relaxed pace. July–August: vibrant but busy — early morning sessions essential.
60 minutes for a focused proposal or engagement. 90 minutes for a fuller session across 2–3 locations. I'll recommend what suits your plans.
Planning remotely
Most couples book from the US, UK, or Australia. I handle location selection, timing, and surprise coordination entirely over email or WhatsApp.
