Closed to foreign visitors until 1989 as a Yugoslav military base, Vis never had the chance to be overdeveloped. What's left is something increasingly rare in the Mediterranean: an island that still feels genuinely itself. Vis sits further out in the Adriatic than any other inhabited Croatian island — about 90 minutes by catamaran from Split. That distance kept it off the tourist map for decades, and even now, in the height of summer, Vis has a quietness and authenticity that Hvar and Dubrovnik lost long ago. The water is clearer, the restaurants are less crowded, the streets are unhurried, and the locals are genuinely proud of what their island still is.
For photography, that translates directly. Vis Town's promenade is one of the most elegant and uncrowded harbours in Dalmatia. The narrow streets of both Vis Town and Komiža have a depth of character that you can walk slowly through without navigating tourist groups. And Fort George — built by the British Royal Navy in 1813 on a hill above the port — offers a sunset terrace above the open Adriatic that ranks among the finest photography locations I have worked with anywhere in Croatia.
I'm based in Split and reach Vis by fast catamaran. The journey itself is part of the Vis experience — arriving by sea, watching the island come into view, stepping off into a harbour that has its own pace entirely. Fort George — Sunset Fortress
Built by the British Royal Navy in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars, Fort George sits on a hill above Vis Town with 360-degree views across the open Adriatic. The upper terrace faces directly west — completely open to the horizon — and at sunset the sky above the sea turns extraordinary: pink, orange, deep gold, the kind of light that makes almost every photograph exceptional regardless of what's happening in front of it.
For elopement ceremonies and intimate vow exchanges, the Fort George terrace is one of the most powerful settings I photograph anywhere in Croatia. The combination of 19th-century stone fortifications, Mediterranean garden plantings, panoramic sea views, and that west-facing sunset light creates something that feels genuinely cinematic without any arrangement or decoration. Couples who choose Fort George for their elopement almost universally describe it as the most beautiful place they've ever stood.

Fort George gives you both simultaneously, with open sky on all sides and a western horizon completely unobstructed by land. When the sun drops below that horizon the colours are extraordinary — and the fortress stone holds the warmth in a way that photographs with a depth and richness that's hard to find anywhere else.

Vis Town Promenade & Harbour
The promenade running along Vis Town harbour is one of the most quietly elegant waterfronts in Dalmatia — lined with 19th-century Austro-Hungarian villas, old stone houses, fishing boats rocking gently in clear water, and the kind of unhurried Mediterranean atmosphere that you can still find on Vis precisely because the island sees far fewer visitors than its neighbours. There are no souvenir shops, no beach bar speakers, no cruise ship crowds. Just the harbour, the sea, and the sound of the island going about its day.
For couples sessions, the promenade gives a natural starting point — a relaxed, open walk along the water that eases into the session before moving into the old town streets. The evening light reflecting off the harbour is exceptional, and the villas lining the promenade provide an architectural backdrop that feels refined and genuinely historic rather than reconstructed for tourism.

Narrow Streets of Vis Town & Komiža
Behind the promenade, Vis Town's narrow streets run back through clusters of old stone houses, vine-covered walls, small squares, and the kind of architectural detail that accumulates over centuries of island life. Further across the island, Komiža — the fishing village on the western bay — has an even older and more compact old town, with a Venetian tower, a harbour lined with traditional fishing boats, and streets so narrow that the buildings touch overhead in places.
For photography, these streets offer something the open promenade and fortress can't — intimacy. Soft light filtering through stone alleys, doorways and windows as natural frames, textures and colours that feel genuinely old. Couples walking slowly through Komiža or the back streets of Vis Town, stopping, exploring, simply being in one of the most authentic places in the Adriatic — this produces photographs that feel like a document of a real day rather than a managed session.
A Vis Session
A typical session on Vis combines two locations naturally — most commonly the promenade and narrow streets of Vis Town, finishing at Fort George for the sunset. For elopements, Fort George works as the ceremony location with portraits on the terrace as the light drops, followed by a relaxed walk back through the town in the remaining evening warmth.
Because Vis requires a 90-minute catamaran journey from Split, I plan Vis sessions carefully around ferry times — typically arriving mid-afternoon, shooting through golden hour and sunset, then returning on the evening catamaran. For couples staying on the island, there's more flexibility and I can build around a morning session in Komiža or the hidden bays as well.
