Korčula Old Town sits on a narrow peninsula surrounded by sea on three sides — a medieval walled city built by Venetian craftsmen with its distinctive herringbone street layout, cathedral towers, and Renaissance palaces. It has the architecture and drama of Dubrovnik with a fraction of the visitor numbers, which means that on Korčula you can have a stone street, a harbour view, or a terrace above the sea entirely to yourself.
What makes Korčula particularly special for photography is the variety within a short distance of each other — the dramatic west-facing terrace for sunset proposals, the authentic old town alleys for intimate portraits, the promenade and harbour for relaxed couples sessions, and then the islands of Badija and Vrnik just a short boat ride away for those who want complete seclusion. Few places in Croatia offer that range so naturally.
I'm based in Split and reach Korčula by fast catamaran. I know the island well and plan every session around the specific character of each location and the light at each time of day.
Where I Shoot in Korčula
The West Terrace
The western tip of Korčula Old Town's peninsula is where I photograph most proposals on the island — and it's easy to understand why. The terrace faces directly west across open water, giving an unobstructed view of the sun setting over the Pelješac peninsula and the open Adriatic beyond. The ancient walls drop to the sea below, the town rises behind you, and as the light drops the entire sky turns colour. It's one of the most naturally cinematic settings for a proposal anywhere on the Croatian coast.
For surprise proposals I arrive early, position discreetly on the terrace or along the walls, and use a telephoto lens so the moment is completely between the two of you. The terrace itself gives the perfect natural framing — sea in front, ancient stone all around — and the sunset light does the rest.

Old Town — Alleys & Cathedral Square
The interior of Korčula Old Town is built on a herringbone pattern — narrow lanes branching off the main spine at angles designed to reduce the wind, creating a series of intimate stone corridors where light filters in beautifully throughout the day. The Cathedral of St. Mark anchors the main square with its Gothic-Renaissance facade, and the surrounding streets are some of the most characterful in the Adriatic — weathered stone, carved doorways, Mediterranean plants climbing old walls.
For engagement sessions and post-proposal portraits, the old town alleys give a natural, unhurried backdrop. There's no need for posing or direction — the setting and the light do the work. Walking slowly through these streets together, exploring corners, stopping in small squares — this is the session that feels most authentic to what Korčula actually is.

Island of Badija
A ten-minute water taxi ride from Korčula Town, Badija is a small forested island home to a 14th-century Franciscan monastery, wild deer that roam freely through the woods, and almost no other people. Pine and cypress trees, stone monastery walls, a small pebble beach, and complete quiet — Badija is one of the most genuinely peaceful and private places I photograph anywhere in Croatia.
For intimate elopements and vow renewals, Badija is exceptional. The monastery cloister and its gardens offer a setting with real historic depth and natural beauty. The small beach gives an open, sea-facing option for those who want the Adriatic as their backdrop. And the deer — unhurried, gentle, often appearing without warning through the trees — add a quality to the photographs that no other location in the region can offer. When couples ask me for the most intimate and private elopement location near Korčula, Badija is always my first answer.

Why Badija works so well for elopements:
Island of Vrnik
Vrnik is a tiny island just off the eastern tip of Korčula — a former stone quarry that supplied the white limestone used to build Diocletian's Palace in Split and parts of the White House in Washington D.C. Today it's a quiet, almost uninhabited island with a handful of houses, old quarry terraces dropping to crystal clear water, and a wildness that feels completely removed from anywhere touristic.
For couples who want an intimate session somewhere genuinely off the beaten path — somewhere that feels discovered rather than visited — Vrnik offers that. The old quarry stone, the clear water, the sense of history embedded in the rock itself, and the complete absence of other people make it one of the most distinctive locations I work with near Korčula. It's not well known, and that's exactly the point.
Best for: adventurous couples, intimate sessions away from any crowd, unique location portraits

A Korčula Session —
A typical session in Korčula runs 60–90 minutes and naturally combines two locations — most commonly the old town alleys and the west terrace, or the promenade and one of the nearby islands. For elopements, I recommend building around Badija or Vrnik as the ceremony location, then returning to the old town for portraits — the contrast between the island seclusion and the medieval town gives the day a natural shape and real variety in the photographs.
For surprise proposals on the west terrace, I arrive early, position on or below the terrace walls, and work with a telephoto lens so the moment is entirely private between the two of you. Most proposals here happen at sunset — the light, the setting, and the sea combine in a way that needs no arrangement or decoration.
