Different Settings.
Most photographers in Split shoot Diocletian's Palace and Sustipan and call it done. Split is far more than that — ancient Roman architecture, a sculptural gallery above the sea, wild coastal cliffs, quiet beaches, and the open Adriatic where a boat elopement feels like nothing else on earth. Each of these settings produces completely different photographs, and each suits a different kind of couple.
I'm based in Split and have been photographing here for years. I sail these waters — I own a sailboat and know the coast between Split and the islands intimately. That's not a marketing line; it means that when a couple wants to elope on a boat, I'm not calling a charter company I've never used. I know exactly what the light looks like on the water at 6pm in July, which anchorages give privacy, and how to make that session feel like a day on the sea rather than a photoshoot.
Where I Shoot in Split
Diocletian's Palace & Old Town
Built in 305 AD, Diocletian's Palace is one of the best-preserved Roman complexes in the world — and people still live inside it. Restaurants, apartments, and tiny shops occupy ancient walls and vaulted cellars. For photography, the layering of Roman, medieval, and Venetian architecture within a few hundred metres creates endless variety: open courtyards, narrow alleys filtering soft light, column-lined passages, and the sweeping Riva promenade opening directly onto the sea.
The secret with the Palace is timing. In July the main Peristyle square fills with tourists from 9am. But the narrower alleys on the northern side — away from the main tourist route — stay quiet throughout the day, and early morning gives you the whole complex almost to yourself. For a proposal in the Peristyle or a golden hour engagement walk through the back streets, the experience feels entirely different from the midday tourist version of the same space.

Meštrović Gallery
Permit required
The former home and studio of Ivan Meštrović — Croatia's greatest sculptor — is one of the most refined and underused photography locations in Split. The white modernist villa sits in landscaped gardens above the sea, with colonnaded terraces, sculpted stone details, Mediterranean cypress trees, and open sea views that feel completely removed from the city centre. It photographs with a quiet elegance that's hard to find anywhere else in Split.
For engagement sessions and elopement portraits where the couple wants something refined and architectural — rather than ancient or dramatic — the Meštrović Gallery is my first recommendation. The combination of white stone, garden greenery, and sea light gives the images a Mediterranean editorial quality that's distinctive and timeless.

Sea Cliffs — Elopements & Vow Renewals

The coastal cliffs southwest of Split — running past Kaštelet, Kasjuni, but also outside of the city and toward the open sea — are where I photograph most elopement ceremonies and vow renewals in Split. Rocky limestone dropping directly into clear Adriatic water, Hvar and Brač visible across the channel on clear days, and a sense of complete openness and solitude that you simply can't find in the city centre.
For couples who want to exchange vows privately — without an audience, without a venue fee, without any formality — these cliffs are perfect. The ceremony can be as simple or as meaningful as you want, the setting provides everything, and the photographs look like nothing else you'd see from a hotel garden or a palace courtyard. When the sun drops over the open Adriatic from this angle, the light is extraordinary.

You don't need a permit, a celebrant, or any advance organisation for an informal vow exchange on the cliffs. Couples bring their own words, I arrive early to find the right spot, and we treat it as a private moment between the two of you with the sea as your witness. Simple, meaningful, and completely yours.

Beaches Around Split
Croatia is mostly rocky coastline, but the beaches around Split — Kasjuni, Bačvice, Firule, and several quieter coves accessible only on foot — offer something softer and more relaxed. For couples who want a session that feels genuinely light and unhurried, a barefoot beach session in the late afternoon captures a completely different side of Split: turquoise water, warm sand, soft diffused light, and the kind of photographs that look like a holiday memory rather than a formal shoot.
Beach sessions work especially well as the second part of a longer engagement session finishing barefoot by the water as the light drops. The contrast between the two settings tells a much fuller story.

Boat Elopement on the Adriatic
Unique to Split
This is the session I get asked about more and more — and it's the one I'm most personally at home with. I'm a sailor. I have a boat and I know the waters between Split and the islands intimately. For couples who want to elope or exchange vows somewhere completely private, completely surrounded by sea, with Hvar or Brač on the horizon and nothing else around them — a boat elopement on the Adriatic is unlike anything else I photograph.
The session works by chartering a sailboat or motor vessel from Split, heading out into the channel or toward a secluded anchorage between the islands, and using that setting for the ceremony and portraits. The boat becomes the backdrop, the sea becomes the location, and the photographs have an openness and sense of freedom that no land-based session can replicate. Some couples exchange vows on deck at anchor. Some sail the whole session. Some combine an hour at sea with time on a deserted island beach.
